Passionate about training, behaviour, and mentoring? Want to help colleagues ensure our four-legged friends are ready for their forever homes?
We’re looking for a Behaviour Officer to support our rehoming centres in the South East of England with their training and development needs.
About this role
As Behaviour Officer, you’ll:
- visit allocated rehoming centres twice monthly to complete population overview, case work, specialist staff mentoring and development,
- deliver training sessions to colleagues in rehoming centres and online, reviewing staff development needs and identifying knowledge gaps, and then developing programmes to address these needs,
- mentor, shadow, and coach colleagues in the region, providing on-the-job case support, informal and formal training,
- develop training materials, keeping up to date with latest research and clinical practice to ensure content is relevant and high quality.
Please note, this role is being offered as a maternity cover contract until June 2025.
About you
For success in this role, you’ll need to have an in-depth knowledge of dog behaviour and welfare, with lots of practical experience in the rescue and rehoming environment. You’ll also need a track record of coaching, mentoring, and training others, ideally with experience of delivering on-the-job, informal and formal training. Therefore, you’ll need excellent communication and people skills, and a genuine passion for animal welfare and rehoming.
A full manual driving licence is essential as driving is a part of this role. This role will involve significant travel to Rehoming Centres in the region, specifically Basildon, Canterbury, and Shoreham-by-Sea.
About this team
Canine behaviour knowledge and practice is central to rehabilitating dogs within our rehoming centres and our professional development team ensure that Dogs Trust staff have access to the best possible education in the field. This is an exciting time of change for the team, as we pilot new ways of working, including spending more time in rehoming centres, increasing capacity for real time staff development opportunities through mentorship and training.

It’s what we’ve been doing since 1891 and how we’ve grown to become the UK’s leading dog charity, helping 12,000 loyal friends find their forever homes every year.
